How to connect an Outlook or Microsoft 365 account

Connect an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 inbox by signing in with Microsoft

Updated 10 October 2026

SpamCipher connects Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts when you sign in with Microsoft. There is no app password option, because Microsoft has turned off password sign-in for mail. Once connected, SpamCipher sends from the inbox and brings its replies into your Unibox.

Note: Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live addresses sign in straight away. Some Microsoft 365 organisations let only an admin approve apps, so your admin may need to approve SpamCipher once first.
Note: To connect many Microsoft 365 mailboxes at once, choose Connect the whole organisation in Step 7. An admin approves SpamCipher once, then you choose the mailboxes, with no sign-in for each one.

Before you start

  • An Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live or Microsoft 365 address
  • The password for that account
  • For some Microsoft 365 organisations, an admin who can approve apps
  • About 5 minutes

Open the Microsoft connection

Step 1: Open Email Accounts

  • In the left menu, point to the paper plane icon to open Outreach.
  • Click Email Accounts.

Step 2: Start a new connection

  • Click + Add new in the top right.
  • A panel opens on the right with the kinds of account you can connect.

Step 3: Choose Microsoft

  • Click Microsoft.

Step 4: Enter your Microsoft address

  • Type your address under Microsoft address.
  • Click Continue.

Step 5: Sign in with Microsoft

  • The panel says your address is a personal Microsoft account.
  • Click Sign in with Microsoft.

Step 6: Allow access in Microsoft

This step happens outside SpamCipher.

  • Microsoft opens. Sign in with the account you are connecting.

  • Microsoft takes you back to Email Accounts. It says Connected with your address, and the account appears on the page.

  • For a work address, the panel shows the ways your organisation can connect.
  • Click Sign in with Microsoft, then click Sign in with Microsoft again on the next screen and continue as in Step 6.
  • If your organisation lets only admins approve apps, click My admin needs to approve SpamCipher instead.
Note: If Microsoft says your organisation needs an admin, SpamCipher brings you back to the approval screen in the next step.

Step 8: Ask your admin to approve SpamCipher

  • Click Email the link to my admin to send your admin the approval link, or click Copy to copy it.
  • If you are the admin, click I am the admin. Approve now.

Step 9: Your admin approves SpamCipher

This step happens outside SpamCipher.

  • The admin opens the link and signs in with their admin account.
  • Microsoft lists what SpamCipher Mail Connect asks for, which is to send and read each person's own mail. The admin accepts. It is done once, for everyone.
  • Back in SpamCipher, click My admin has approved it. Sign in with Microsoft and continue as in Step 6.

Troubleshooting

It says my organisation lets only an admin approve apps

SpamCipher opens the connection again on the approval screen. Send the approval link to your Microsoft 365 admin, and sign in again once they have approved it.

It says that account is not part of the organisation

You signed in with a different account. Sign in with the mailbox you want to connect.

It says my admin has limited SpamCipher Mail Connect to certain people

Ask your admin to add you, then sign in again.

It says a sign-in rule blocked it, or SpamCipher Mail Connect is turned off

Your organisation's settings stopped the sign-in. Ask your admin to allow SpamCipher Mail Connect, then try again.

It says my address does not receive mail through Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com

Your mail is hosted somewhere else. Click Connect it over IMAP and SMTP in the panel, and follow How to connect any inbox with SMTP and IMAP.

Can I use an app password instead?

No. Microsoft has turned off password sign-in for mail, so Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts connect only by signing in.
